Happy Wednesday! Despite the rain, humidity and 100 degree temperatures we are having a great week at Simply Jubilee Events.   Today I wanted to share with you a SJE vintage inspiration board.  One of the biggest trends we are seeing in 2010 is vintage weddings.  To add some vintage flair to your wedding, I recommend going to your local flea markets, thrift stores and www.etsy.com.   You would be surprised what you might find on a Saturday afternoon at your local thrift store or flea market for you wedding. Anything from vintage  jewelry, books for centerpieces or that perfect cake topper.

Selecting godparent-sponsors for support during your nuptial festivities and to guide you through your married life.

The Godparent presents the couple with a Bible or prayer book to encourage them to pray.

A veil ceremony to symbolize God’s Protection

God-parents sponsors drape the bride’s veil over the shoulders of the groom while the couple kneels.  This symbolizes that although the couple may shoulder unexpected burden in marriage they will always be covered and protected by God’s Love.

A cord ceremony is to symbolize that marriage is for life.

The cord is a fabric cord, floral garland or long rosary wrapped around the couple to bind them as husband and wife.  The cord is tied in a figure eight, the mathematical symbol of infinity, to symbolize eternity.

A coin ceremony is to symbolize the sharing of worldly goods.

The thirteen coins presented to the bride by the groom symbolize the groom’s commitment to take care of his bride and make his wealth hers.  The passing of coins back and forth is a symbol of sharing worldly goods, for richer or poorer.  The reason for thirteen coins is because it represents Christ and his twelve apostles. There is also a treasure box, in which the coins are kept in.

A money dance to symbolize prosperity and financial security

Relatives take turns dancing up to the bride and groom and pinning money on their clothes, which allows the couple to spend a few moments with each of their guests. After the money dance, the groom is ridiculed by his friends, tossed in the air while being covered with the veil, and given an apron and broom.

Other traditional dances

At wedding celebration in Mexico, the guests form a heart and the newlyweds dance in the middle.

Another Mexican wedding dance is the Snake Dance, La Vibora.  This is where single women form a line and pass under the couples clasped hands.  When the music stops, one woman is captured in the newlywed’s arms and is given the bouquet.  The single men perform the same dance.

Cake Tradition

A Latino tradition is a cake pull.  One ribbon has a fake diamond ring attached.  Before the cake is cut and served, single women at the reception pull out the ribbons. The one who gets the ribbon with the ring will marry within the year.  If her marriage doesn’t take place, tradition calls for the bride to throw a party in the girl’s honor.

The planners here at Simply Jubilee Events have been privileged to plan several weddings in New Orleans over the past few years. This year will be no different! Many couples love to incorporate a “second line” march into their reception processional.

The “second line” refers to the participants that are not part of the “main line” of the band. Although the tradition came from celebrating the life of a loved one who passed away, the “second line” has become a way to celebrate many joyous events such as weddings. The most common items brides use for their celebration are the parasol and handkerchief. The latter being a popular wedding guest memento because of its size.

The parasol was used to shield participants from the hot southern sun while dancing down the steamy streets of New Orleans. Eventually they became works of art and certain “second liners” became well known based on how well they could twirl one.

Handkerchiefs gained popularity as the crowds grew. Onlookers who wanted to be part of the fun only needed to pull a handkerchief from the jacket of their coat or handbag. So, Laissez Les Bon Temps Rouler (Let the Good Times Roll) when planning your swoon-worthy wedding!

Wedding superstitions have told the tale that rain on your wedding day means no harm, but rather– good luck. Ironically, for brides who have dreamt about this particular day, rain is their worst fear. But look on the “bright” side, not only are you guaranteed a memorable wedding, however your guests will always have a story to share. Being prepared for the unexpected, in regards to weather, is definitely key. Parasols could easily be incorporated into your theme or tradition, much like the  popular “second line dance” that guests engage in at New Orleans’ wedding receptions. Have those parasols handy in your wedding colors, or a traditional black and white, to produce aesthetically pleasing  and romantic photos you’ll fall in love with. You may even like your trendy parasols so much that you’ll consider including them in your photographs rain or shine; if you’re not hiding from the rain, then you might as well hide from the sun. These fashionable parasols could even serve as wedding favors for your guests, they’ll be reminded of your special day with every raindrop.
